No. You cannot expedite an online passport renewal. The State Department’s online renewal system is routine service only. There is no expedite option in the application flow, and no 1 to 3 day return delivery option either.
That surprises people who assumed “online” meant “faster.” It does not. Online means paperless. If speed matters, the online system is the wrong lane, and the government says so in its own eligibility rules: one of them is that you are not traveling for at least 6 weeks.
There is one exception worth knowing, and almost nobody covers it. It is in the section on changed travel plans below.
Can you expedite an online passport renewal?
No. Online passport renewal is available for routine service only, which currently means 4 to 6 weeks of processing plus up to 2 weeks of return delivery time.
To get expedited processing you must renew by mail on Form DS-82 with the $60 expedite fee, or apply in person at a regional passport agency. Those are the only two ways to buy speed from the government.
Why the online renewal system has no expedite option
The portal at opr.travel.state.gov has no toggle, no upsell, no “pay $60 more” checkbox. That is by design, not an oversight. The State Department lists it as an eligibility condition rather than a limitation: to renew online, you must not be traveling for at least 6 weeks from the date you submit.
In other words, the system is not slow because it failed. It was built for people who are not in a hurry, and it screens them at the door.
One consequence catches people badly: your current passport is cancelled the moment you submit online. You cannot use it for international travel while you wait. Keep it anyway, an expired or cancelled passport still works as a citizenship document, but do not plan a trip around it.
Who is eligible to renew a passport online in 2026
Before the speed question, there is a bigger one: can you use online renewal at all? Every box below has to be checked.
- You are age 25 or older.
- The passport you are renewing is, or was, valid for 10 years, and it is either expiring within 1 year or expired less than 5 years ago.
- You are not traveling for at least 6 weeks from your submission date. Online renewals cannot be expedited.
- You are not changing personal information such as your name or sex.
- You are physically located in a US state or territory when you submit.
- You have the passport with you, it is not damaged or mutilated, and you have never reported it lost or stolen.
There is also a document-swap rule most people miss. You can renew a book into a book, a card into a card, or either into a book-and-card set. But you cannot convert a card into a book, or a book into a card, online. Those require renewing by mail.

Miss any requirement and the system routes you toward a paper application. If you are short on time, that is the better outcome anyway.
How long online passport renewal really takes
Routine processing is 4 to 6 weeks. Since there is no inbound envelope, you skip the mailing time on the front end, but you still wait up to 2 weeks for return delivery, and you cannot pay to shorten it.
Realistic total: 5 to 8 weeks from submission to mailbox. The State Department’s own 6-week travel rule is the honest signal here. If your trip is closer than that, do not use this system.
What if you already submitted online and your travel plans changed?
This is the part almost no guide covers, and it is the single most useful fact on this page.
If your international travel plans change after you submit an online renewal, call the National Passport Information Center at 877-487-2778 and request expedited service or 1 to 3 day return delivery. The State Department names this explicitly as a reason to call.
Two caveats. It is a request, not a guarantee, and it depends on how far your application has already moved through processing. And it does not undo the cancellation of your old passport. Call the moment your plans change, not the week before you fly.
Your 4 options when you need a renewed passport faster
Option 1: renew by mail and pay for expedited service
The most overlooked fix. Mailing is faster than online when speed matters, which sounds backwards until you see the numbers.
File Form DS-82 by mail with your current passport, a compliant passport photo, and payment. Add $60 for expedited service and write EXPEDITE on the outside of the envelope. Add $23.36 for 1 to 3 day return delivery. You can also pay the post office for Priority Mail Express on the way in.
Timeline: up to 2 weeks inbound mailing time, 2 to 3 weeks processing, up to 2 weeks return delivery. That is up to 7 weeks at the default, or roughly 3 to 4 weeks if you pay for fast shipping in both directions. See our full breakdown of how long a passport really takes for the complete math.
Option 2: book an appointment at a passport agency
If your international travel is within 14 calendar days, you can request an in-person appointment at one of the 26 regional passport agencies. You need proof of that travel, such as an airline ticket or itinerary.
Appointments are required and there are no walk-ins. Try to book online first. If you cannot get an appointment online, call the National Passport Information Center at 877-487-2778. Slots go fast between late winter and summer, which is exactly when most people need them.
Bring your completed form, your current passport, and a passport photo that meets requirements. Photos edited with apps, filters, or AI tools are rejected outright.
Option 3: life-or-death emergency service
Narrow and specific. This applies when you must travel abroad within 3 business days because an immediate family member outside the United States has died, is dying, or has a life-threatening illness or injury.
Immediate family means a parent or legal guardian, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent. That is the complete list. It does not extend to cousins, aunts, uncles, or in-laws.
You will need documentation: a death certificate, a statement from a mortuary, or a letter on hospital letterhead signed by a doctor explaining the condition. This is not a general-purpose fast lane.
Option 4: use a registered passport expediting courier
This covers the gap nobody else does: no agency appointments available in your city, no qualifying emergency, and a trip that will not wait.

How to tell a legitimate courier from a scam
The State Department publishes an explicit warning about this, so read it carefully before you hand anyone money or documents.
The only official place to renew a US passport online is opr.travel.state.gov. Any company claiming it can submit your online renewal for you is misrepresenting what it does. You must complete and sign your own online application. No third party can do it.
A legitimate expediting service handles paper applications and walks them into agencies. Check for a real physical address, a phone number answered by a person, and clear pricing before you commit. Be suspicious of any site ending in .com, .us or .org that implies it is a government portal, including ones with “gov” in the name.

Government fees are identical across the expedited options. What changes is access, whether you can get in the door at all, not the price of the passport itself.
Which option to choose based on your departure date
- More than 8 weeks out. Renew online if you are eligible. Cheapest path, no expedite fee, no envelope.
- 4 to 8 weeks out. Renew by mail with the $60 expedite fee and pay for fast shipping in both directions.
- 2 to 4 weeks out. Expedited mail with paid shipping both ways is still viable, but the margin is thin. Consider a courier as a backup.
- Within 14 days, with proof of travel. Try for a passport agency appointment immediately.
- Within 14 days, no appointment available, no emergency. A registered courier is the realistic option.
- Genuine family emergency abroad, days not weeks. Life-or-death emergency service.

The $35 execution fee applies to first-time applicants and to anyone not eligible for renewal, because it covers in-person identity verification. Renewals by mail and online skip it.
If you pay the $60 and the State Department misses its own stated processing window, you can request a refund of that fee. The application fee is not refundable.
Mistakes that quietly add weeks to a passport renewal
- An edited passport photo. Filters, background blur, app retouching or AI enhancement all get flagged. Use a proper passport photo service.
- Submitting online with a trip inside 6 weeks. The most common version of this mistake, and it cancels your old passport in the process.
- Ignoring a request for more information. You have 90 days to respond, but your application sits idle the entire time.
- Assuming the expedite fee covers shipping. It does not. Return delivery is a separate $23.36.
- Trying to renew a card into a book online. The system will not allow it, and you lose the days you spent trying.

Can I pay extra to expedite an online passport renewal?
No. There is no fee or premium tier inside the online system that adds expedited processing. Speed is available only through mail-in applications with the $60 expedite fee, a passport agency appointment, life-or-death emergency service, or a registered courier.
Can I cancel an online renewal and switch to expedited?
You cannot pull the application back and refile it as an expedited mail application. What you can do is call the National Passport Information Center at 877-487-2778 and request expedited service or 1 to 3 day return delivery if your travel plans changed. It is a request, not a guarantee, and it depends how far your application has progressed.
Can someone else submit my online renewal for me?
No. The State Department requires you to complete and sign your own online application. Any company claiming otherwise is not authorized, and the State Department cannot get involved in a dispute with them or refund an unauthorized application.
Can I travel while my renewal is being processed?
